Zac – The Z-Proso Mascot
The Z-Proso Panel Study has been following children and adolescents for over 20 years, collecting data on their lives, behavior, and environment. To bring a personal and friendly touch to this long-running research project, the idea of creating a mascot was born:
Zac – a cheerful dinosaur that grows along with the participants.
Task
Develop a mascot character that can be adapted across multiple age stages (from baby to teenager) while maintaining its core identity.
The figure needed to be approachable, modern, and gender-neutral, avoiding stereotypical color associations, and suitable for various applications such as letters, surveys, and presentations..
Concept
The base design for Zac was created according to the client’s wishes and then further developed to ensure flexibility for future adaptations. The goal was to design a character that feels appealing to children, teenagers, and young adults alike. To encourage diversity and avoid traditional gender-color coding, multiple color versions were designed. The character was envisioned as lively, friendly, and easily recognizable, forming a consistent yet dynamic identity across different age groups.
Solution
Zac was developed as a scalable vector illustration, making it easy to integrate into both print and digital formats. For each age stage (e.g. baby, preschool, and teenager) tailored variations were created that subtly adapt Zac’s appearance while keeping its distinctive features. Additionally, several movement and color variants were introduced to add dynamism and visual diversity. The result is a mascot that feels playful but still a bit professional, perfectly suited for long-term engagement with the study’s participants or for public communication.
